The staff at Worcester’s Rainbow Child Development Center on Edward Street knew that in order to combat the national trends toward obesity among low-income children, they would have to enlist some help. That help comes in the form of fun stretches, teamwork and good food — perhaps eliciting more laughter and giggles than one might expect when talking about such serious subject matter.

Between a high reliance on processed food and working parents who are less likely to have time for fitness-related activities, the pint-sized patrons at RCDC — like kids from financially challenged households across the country — have a couple of chips stacked against them in the national war against obesity. 2013 YouthWorks Success Stories

Rainbow Child Development Center participated in the 2013 YouthWorks Summer Program administered by the Central MA Workforce Investment Board. Rainbow was featured in the Central MA Youth Employment News on Dec. 27 , 2013. The article is an employer testimonial that highlights the benefit of participating in YouthWorks.

“Barbara Malesky was placed in Rainbow’s Preschool Group 3 classroom. This Group is comprised of 15 children and 2 teachers. Barbara is a senior at Worcester Technical High School where she is  pursuing a career in Early Childhood Education. It was evident that Barbara had prior experience working  with preschool children. Her prior experience which is a component of her studies at Worcester Tech,  includes a six month internship at Worcester Tech’s Child Development Center during her freshman year  and a full year internship during her sophomore year. Additionally, she has interned at the Guild of St. Agnes  located on Granite St. during the past year.
